Dua Before Eating (Bismillah)
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
Bismillah
In the name of Allah.
Learn the authentic Dua before eating, its meaning and pronunciation, what to say if you forget, and the Prophetic manners of beginning a meal.
Dua Before Eating
Before beginning food, say:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
Transliteration:
Bismillah
Meaning:
In the name of Allah.
This short phrase is called the Tasmiyah. A Muslim says it before taking the first bite to begin the meal by remembering Allah.
Authentic Hadith Evidence
Umar ibn Abi Salamah reported that he was a young boy under the care of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ taught him three clear manners of eating: mention Allah’s name, eat with the right hand, and eat from the part of the shared dish nearest to him.
This instruction is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari 5376 and Sahih Muslim 2022a. It provides the central evidence for saying Bismillah before eating.
The wording is simple. There is no need to make the Dua difficult for children or new learners. Say Bismillah sincerely and begin eating.
Pronunciation Guide
بِسْمِ — Bismi
اللَّهِ — llahi
Together:
Bismillah
The phrase should flow naturally without inserting extra sounds. The final sound is light in normal connected pronunciation here. Listen to a qualified Arabic or Quran teacher if you need help with the letters and vowel endings.
Do not worry about using an artificial accent. Correct letters, a clear meaning and sincere remembrance are more important than speaking quickly.
Word-By-Word Meaning
بِسْمِ means “in the name of.”
اللَّهِ means “Allah.”
By saying Bismillah, the believer begins an ordinary daily action with remembrance of the One who provided the food.
When Should Bismillah Be Said?
Say Bismillah immediately before starting the meal, ideally before the first bite. It may also be said before a snack or any other food.
If several people are eating together, each person should remember Allah when beginning. Parents can gently prompt young children until the habit becomes natural.
Avoid turning the moment into a complicated ceremony. Pause briefly, say Bismillah, and begin with good manners.
What If You Forget At The Beginning?
If you remember after already starting the meal, say:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فِي أَوَّلِهِ وَآخِرِهِ
Transliteration:
Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa akhirihi
Meaning:
In the name of Allah at its beginning and its end.
This instruction is reported from Aishah in Sunan Abi Dawud 3767 and Jami at-Tirmidhi 1858.
Say it as soon as you remember. Do not abandon the remembrance merely because the meal has already begun.
Pronunciation Of The Forgotten-Dua
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ — Bismillahi
فِي — fi
أَوَّلِهِ — awwalihi
وَآخِرِهِ — wa akhirihi
Read the doubled Waw in awwalihi clearly. In akhirihi, the first letter is Hamzah followed by a long “aa” sound. Practise slowly before joining the full sentence.
The transliteration is only a learning aid. The Arabic text is the original wording and should remain the main reference.
Three Prophetic Table Manners
The Hadith of Umar ibn Abi Salamah combines three valuable habits:
1. Mention Allah’s name.
2. Eat with the right hand.
3. Eat from what is nearest to you in a shared dish.
These manners teach remembrance, discipline and consideration for others.
Use the right hand when able. When sharing one plate, begin from the portion directly in front of you instead of reaching across other people. If food is served separately or different items are placed around the table, apply the principle with courtesy and common sense.
Teaching This Dua To Children
The main Hadith was itself spoken to a young boy, making it especially suitable for teaching children.
Use a simple routine:
- Place the food down.
- Pause before the first bite.
- Say Bismillah together.
- Encourage use of the right hand.
- Remind the child gently rather than turning the meal into an argument.
A small visual reminder near the dining area can help at first. Remove the prompt once the child remembers independently.
Parents should model the habit consistently. A child is more likely to remember Bismillah when adults also pause and say it before eating.
Is This Dua A Quran Verse?
Bismillah is Quranic Arabic and appears in the Quran, but this lesson teaches it specifically as a Prophetic practice before eating. The instruction is established through Hadith.
Keep the source distinction clear: the eating practice comes from the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, supported by the cited narrations.
WHY BEGIN A MEAL WITH ALLAH’S NAME?
Food can easily become an automatic part of the day. Saying Bismillah interrupts heedlessness and reminds the believer that provision is a blessing from Allah.
The phrase is brief enough to use at every meal. Its value lies not in length but in beginning consciously, gratefully and according to Prophetic guidance.
This remembrance can also improve the atmosphere of a family meal. It provides a calm starting point and connects basic table manners with worship.
Common Mistakes
- Starting to eat before saying Bismillah.
- Believing nothing can be said after forgetting at the beginning.
- Using an invented or unnecessarily complicated formula instead of learning the authentic wording first.
- Saying the words so quickly that the letters become unclear.
- Treating transliteration as a replacement for the Arabic text.
- Teaching children harshly rather than reminding them gently.
- Saying Bismillah but ignoring the connected manners of the right hand and courtesy at a shared dish.
- Quoting a Hadith without checking its source or reference.
Daily Practice Method
Stage 1: Read the Arabic slowly five times:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
Stage 2: Say the meaning:
In the name of Allah.
Stage 3: Practise the forgotten-Dua:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فِي أَوَّلِهِ وَآخِرِهِ
Stage 4: Use Bismillah before every meal for one week.
Stage 5: At the end of the week, check whether you now remember without a written prompt.

Lesson Summary
Before eating, say بِسْمِ اللَّهِ — Bismillah — meaning “In the name of Allah.” The Prophet ﷺ taught Muslims to mention Allah’s name, eat with the right hand and eat from what is nearest in a shared dish. If Bismillah was forgotten at the beginning, say بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فِي أَوَّلِهِ وَآخِرِهِ as soon as you remember. This short, authentic practice turns the beginning of every meal into an act of remembrance and establishes considerate Prophetic manners at the table.
