Tarteel e Quran Institute October 7, 2026 6 min read 13 views

The authentic virtues of Surah Al-Mulk, why the Prophet ﷺ read it every night, its key verses with translation, and an easy plan to memorise it.

Surah Al-Mulk, also called Tabarak after its first word, is the 67th chapter of the Quran and opens the 29th juz. It is only 30 verses long and takes about seven to ten minutes to recite, yet it carries one of the most beautiful promises in the Sunnah: a surah that intercedes for the one who recites it. That is why so many Muslims make it part of their nightly routine. This guide covers the authentic narrations about Surah Al-Mulk, its meaning and main themes, and a simple way to memorise it.

In this guide:

About Surah Al-Mulk

  • Chapter: 67, the first surah of the 29th juz (Juz Tabarak)
  • Verses: 30
  • Revealed in: Makkah
  • Name: Al-Mulk means "the Dominion" or "the Sovereignty"
  • Other names: Tabarak, and in some narrations al-Mani'ah (the Protector)

Like most Makki surahs, Al-Mulk focuses on the foundations of faith: Allah's absolute sovereignty, the purpose of life and death, the signs of Allah in creation, and the reality of the Hereafter.

Authentic virtues of Surah Al-Mulk

1. A surah that intercedes until its reciter is forgiven

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "There is a surah of the Quran containing thirty verses which interceded for a man until he was forgiven. It is Tabarak alladhi biyadihil-mulk." (Sunan Abi Dawud 1400, Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2891, who graded it hasan)

2. The Prophet ﷺ read it every night

Jabir reported that the Prophet ﷺ would not sleep until he had recited Alif Lam Mim Tanzil (Surah As-Sajdah) and Tabarak alladhi biyadihil-mulk. (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2892; graded authentic by Shaykh al-Albani)

3. A protection in the grave

It is reported from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud that Surah Al-Mulk is "the protector" that defends its reciter from the punishment of the grave. (Reported by an-Nasa'i in as-Sunan al-Kubra and al-Hakim; graded hasan by Shaykh al-Albani)

Scholars explain that this intercession and protection are for those who make Surah Al-Mulk part of their lives: reciting it regularly, understanding it and acting on what it teaches.

Reading Surah Al-Mulk every night before sleep

Following the practice of the Prophet ﷺ, the most common time to read Surah Al-Mulk is at night before going to sleep. Many people read it after isha, or any time between maghrib and fajr. A simple bedtime routine might be:

  • Make wudu and get ready for bed.
  • Recite Surah Al-Mulk, slowly and with Tajweed, from memory or from the mushaf.
  • Recite Ayatul Kursi and the other bedtime adhkar.
  • Say the dua before sleeping.

Because the surah is short, it is one of the easiest Sunnah habits to keep every single night, even on busy days.

Key verses of Surah Al-Mulk with translation

The opening: Allah's dominion over everything (67:1)

Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He is over all things competent - (67:1)

The purpose of life and death (67:2)

[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving - (67:2)

This verse is one of the clearest statements of why we were created: life itself is a test, and what matters is not how much we do but how well we do it.

A creation without flaws (67:3)

[And] who created seven heavens in layers. You do not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So return [your] vision [to the sky]; do you see any breaks? (67:3)

The closing question: who would bring you water? (67:30)

Say, "Have you considered: if your water was to become sunken [into the earth], then who could bring you flowing water?" (67:30)

The surah ends by reminding us how completely we depend on Allah for something as basic as water. You can read the full surah with translation in our online Quran reader, English translation and Urdu translation.

The main themes of Surah Al-Mulk

  • Allah's sovereignty (verses 1–5): all dominion belongs to Allah; He created death and life as a test and the heavens without a single flaw.
  • The regret of the people of the Fire (verses 6–11): they will say that had they listened or reasoned, they would not be among the companions of the Blaze.
  • Allah's knowledge and the reward of the believers (verses 12–14): those who fear their Lord unseen will have forgiveness and a great reward; Allah knows what is in the hearts.
  • Signs in creation (verses 15–24): the earth made easy to walk on, the birds held in the sky, provision, hearing, sight and hearts.
  • The Day of Judgement and reliance on Allah (verses 25–30): the certainty of the Hour, trusting in Ar-Rahman, and our total dependence on Him.

How to memorise Surah Al-Mulk

With 30 verses, Surah Al-Mulk is an ideal first longer surah to memorise after the short surahs of Juz Amma. A plan that works for most learners:

  • Weeks 1–2: verses 1–10, two or three verses a day
  • Weeks 3–4: verses 11–20
  • Weeks 5–6: verses 21–30
  • Every night: recite everything you have memorised so far before sleeping, reading the rest from the mushaf

Listen to a clear reciter before learning each new portion, and have a teacher check your recitation so that mistakes are not memorised. Our articles on staying consistent with revision and helping children memorise the Quran have more tips. The surah also contains many examples of the noon sakinah and tanween rules, so it is great Tajweed practice.
