The authentic virtues of reading Surah Al-Kahf on Friday, when to read it, a 20-minute plan, and the four stories and lessons the surah teaches.

Every Friday, millions of Muslims around the world open their mushaf to Surah Al-Kahf, the eighteenth chapter of the Quran. It is a weekly habit rooted in the Sunnah, and it carries a beautiful reward. But Surah Al-Kahf is more than a Friday tradition: its four stories speak directly to the trials every believer faces. This guide explains the authentic virtues, when to read it, how to fit it into a busy Friday, and the lessons inside the surah.

In this guide:

About Surah Al-Kahf

Surah Al-Kahf ("The Cave") is a Makki surah of 110 verses, found in the 15th and 16th juz of the Quran. It begins by praising Allah for revealing the Book without any crookedness:

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنزَلَ عَلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَلَمْ يَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عِوَجَا ۜ

[All] praise is [due] to Allāh, who has sent down upon His Servant [Muḥammad (ﷺ)] the Book and has not made therein any deviance.

The surah centres on four stories, each about a different kind of test: a test of faith, of wealth, of knowledge and of power. Together they prepare the believer for the trials of this world and, according to the hadith, for the greatest trial of all, the Dajjal.

The authentic virtues of Surah Al-Kahf

1. A light between two Fridays

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever reads Surah Al-Kahf on the day of Jumu'ah, a light will shine for him between the two Fridays." (Reported by al-Hakim and al-Bayhaqi; graded authentic by Shaykh al-Albani in Sahih al-Jami' 6470)

2. Protection from the Dajjal

Abu ad-Darda' reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever memorises ten verses from the beginning of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal." (Sahih Muslim 809)

Memorising the first ten verses is an achievable goal for most learners and a wonderful one to set for children too.

When to read Surah Al-Kahf on Friday

In the Islamic calendar, a day begins at sunset. Many scholars therefore explain that the time for reading Surah Al-Kahf starts at maghrib on Thursday evening and continues until maghrib on Friday. You can read it in one sitting or spread it across the day, before or after Jumu'ah. What matters most is that you make it a consistent weekly habit.

How to read Surah Al-Kahf in about 20 minutes

At a steady pace, most fluent readers finish Surah Al-Kahf in 20 to 30 minutes. If that feels like a lot on a busy day, divide it:

  • Thursday after maghrib: verses 1–31 (the young men of the cave and the opening)
  • Friday after fajr: verses 32–59 (the two gardens and reminders)
  • Friday after Jumu'ah or asr: verses 60–110 (Musa and al-Khidr, Dhul-Qarnayn and the ending)

If you are still learning to read Arabic fluently, it is better to read a portion slowly and correctly than to rush. The four stories of Surah Al-Kahf and their lessons

1. The young men of the cave: the test of faith (verses 9–26)

A group of young believers left their people to protect their faith and took refuge in a cave. Allah caused them to sleep for many years and then woke them as a sign. Lesson: hold on to your faith even when society turns against it, and trust that Allah protects those who seek Him.

2. The owner of the two gardens: the test of wealth (verses 32–44)

A man blessed with two flourishing gardens became arrogant and forgot that his wealth came from Allah, until his gardens were destroyed. Lesson: wealth is a trust and a test; gratitude and humility protect it, while arrogance destroys it.

3. Musa and al-Khidr: the test of knowledge (verses 60–82)

Prophet Musa travelled to learn from a servant of Allah who had been given special knowledge. Events that looked wrong at first had wisdom Musa could not yet see. Lesson: seek knowledge with humility and patience, and trust Allah's wisdom when you do not understand His decree.

4. Dhul-Qarnayn: the test of power (verses 83–98)

A just and powerful ruler travelled the earth, helping the weak and building a barrier against Ya'juj and Ma'juj, while attributing everything to Allah's mercy. Lesson: power is a means to serve people and please Allah, not to oppress them.

The surah ends with a reminder that whoever hopes to meet their Lord should do righteous deeds and associate no one in His worship.

The dua of the young men of the cave

One of the most beautiful supplications in the surah is the prayer of the young believers as they entered the cave (18:10):

إِذْ أَوَى ٱلْفِتْيَةُ إِلَى ٱلْكَهْفِ فَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا

[Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, "Our Lord, grant us from Yourself mercy and prepare for us from our affair right guidance."

It is a dua for every moment when you need Allah's mercy and guidance in a difficult decision. Find more supplications in our daily duas collection.
